Introducing the Queer Play Reading Club – A New Monthly Event from Queer Theatre in Partnership with Nick Hern Books

We’re thrilled to announce a brand-new monthly event from Queer Theatre: the Queer Play Reading Club, in proud partnership with Nick Hern Books.

Taking place on the third Tuesday of every month at The Railway – our local queer-run pub in Clapham – this new initiative is a celebration of the richness and diversity of LGBTQIA+ playwriting. Hosted by our Artistic Director Andrew Keates, each session invites our community to come together, share stories, and connect through the power of queer theatre.

Every month, we’ll spotlight a play published by Nick Hern Books, read aloud by those attending. Before diving into the play, emerging playwrights will be invited to share short scenes or monologues for supportive and constructive feedback. After the full-length reading, we’ll open up a discussion, giving everyone a chance to explore and reflect on the themes, characters and voices we’ve just encountered.

Upcoming titles:

Tuesday 20th MayAdam by Frances Poet

Tuesday 17th JunePronoun by Evan Placey

Tuesday 15th JulyThe Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell

This new club joins our growing programme of events, which already includes 2B: Acting Classes, the OutCast Showcase of Queer Actors and Writing, regular theatre trips, social meetups, and networking nights. It’s all part of our mission to ensure LGBTQIA+ theatre-makers always have somewhere to go – to meet likeminded artists, explore queer material, and thrive in a safe, supportive space.

We’re also pleased to be offering exclusive discounts on selected Nick Hern Books titles to all attendees, helping you continue your journey through queer playwriting long after each session ends.

Nick Hern Books’ Managing Director Matt Applewhite shared these words about our collaboration:

“In a world where LGBTQIA+ voices are still threatened or silenced, coming together to read, hear and share these important plays is an act of resistance, solidarity and joy. Queer Theatre’s Play Reading Club creates space for connection and expression, and Nick Hern Books is delighted to help amplify these vital voices and stories.”

And in the words of our own Andrew Keates:

“This isn’t just about reading plays – it’s about building a community. The Queer Play Reading Club creates a home for anyone who loves queer stories. Whether you’re an actor, a writer, or someone who simply cares deeply about LGBTQIA+ voices, this is a regular opportunity to connect with queer people and our stories. It’s an honour to be partnering with such a fine publisher of LGBTQIA+ plays as Nick Hern Books.”
