The Show People Podcast with Andrew Keates,
and special guest, Martin Sherman
Wednesday 11th February 2026
Two Brewers, Clapham
(Only 100 Seats Available)
The award-winning Show People Podcast with Andrew Keates continues its live monthly residency at The Two Brewers with a true living legend of queer writing, award-winning playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman.
On Wednesday 11th February 2026, Martin joins us for a special live recording and a rare, in-depth conversation about the work, the craft, and what it takes to keep telling the truth on stage and screen, especially when the world would rather you didn’t.
Born in Philadelphia and educated at Boston University, Martin now lives in London, and his writing has been produced in more than sixty countries. He is renowned for his Tony-nominated landmark play Bent, which opened at the Royal Court and transferred to the West End starring Ian McKellen, before going on to Broadway starring Richard Gere. The play was later revived at the National Theatre and adapted for the screen in 1998 starring Clive Owen. Bent went on to win the Dramatists Guild’s Hull-Warriner Award, and remains one of the most vital pieces of queer theatre ever written.
His theatre work spans decades and includes Rose (National Theatre and Broadway), Gently Down the Stream (Public Theater and Park Theatre), Onassis (Novello Theatre), Some Sunny Day (Hampstead), A Madhouse in Goa (Lyric Hammersmith and Apollo), When She Danced (King’s Head and Gielgud), Messiah (Hampstead and Aldwych), plus Absolutely! (Perhaps), his acclaimed reworking of Pirandello’s Right You Are (If You Think So) at Wyndham’s Theatre. He also wrote the Broadway musical The Boy from Oz and created a major stage adaptation of E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India (Riverside Theatre and BAM). New work continues, with I’ll Be Seeing You premiering at Pitlochry Festival Theatre in September 2026.
On screen, Martin’s credits include Mrs Henderson Presents (BAFTA-nominated), The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, Callas Forever, Alive and Kicking, and The Clothes in the Wardrobe (released in the US as The Summer House). He is currently writing Frank and Percy for the screen, with a major cast including Sir Ian McKellen and Roger Allam.
Across theatre and film, Martin has been nominated for two Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and two BAFTA Awards, and this evening is a chance to hear directly from a writer whose work has shaped queer storytelling for generations.
🎟️ Tickets are strictly limited to 100, with all profits supporting Queer Theatre’s work nurturing queer talent and telling LGBTQIA+ stories.
